I Love this. Angelic voices and so emotional
Kenny Anderson is a bit of a hero of mine as we got to know eachother quite well in the early '90s in St Andrews. Great bloke and spent over 25 years writing, performing and supporting new music through his Fence Collective independent label. His Mercury nomination a few years back was well deserved.
âŠlast one tonight, as gotto go do storytime. I love The Man in Blackâs interpretation, but Trentâs original is more anger and introspective⊠apologies for the poor sound, but live, this song becomes even darker and in some ways disturbing - ââyou can have it all, my empire of dirtââ
Also, directed by Chris Cunningham and filmed in an underwater tank, the bubles removed in post production.
I know that this first one has been posted a few times, but I make no apology for putting it in here. Itâs a truly wonderful song, and Iâve had it playing on the 'Pod in the car a fair old bit recently. A maserpiece.
Sticking with the late, great Arthur Lee and Love, hereâs a couple of extras from the CD copy of Forever Changes. The first is tracking highlights, which give a fascinating insight into the process of recording, the second is the final version of the song. Particularly noteworthy are Arthurâs comments on Johnny Echolsâ guitar solos.
One off Anna Von Hausswolffâs new album that iâve had on over the last few days. The albumâs ok - some of the songs are under-developed and some of them are dragged on for too long, but what is consistent throughout is the great cacophony of the different organs, synths, drums and guitars mashing together on songs like this. Love the production.
Weâve discussed this before, although not with a beer keeping us company - something weâll have to put right before the end of the season, but that is one amazing track/album for 1967.
For any year.
I too love the Johnny Cash version of Hurt. Not heard this one before. Chilling, especially the piano accompliment.
Wha tI think is amazing is that Trent wrote it about his drug adiction⊠and his pain and anger with that, whereas when Cash sings it, the same lyric seems perfect for his interpretation of regret and nearing lifes end. An amazing song and both stunning interpretations.
I see Leona Lewis also did a version!!! I thought that Depeche Mode did Hurt originally but must have got that mixed up with Personal Jesus which Johnny Cash also did a cover of.
Came across this again after not having listened to Goodbye Jumbo for maybe 20 years⊠But the Waterboys post reminded me of Karl and World Party - think this is the killer tarck from that album⊠so may memories of University days
