Everton has doubts about Balogun’s fitness for the signing and goes after Zirkzee instead.
Chelsea takes advantage of that and Monaco’s need to sell, and comes back hard for Lamine Camara after agreeing to sell Enzo Fernández to Man City.
The Blues reach a deal with the Monegasques. But United won’t let Zirkzee go, and Everton has already let Beto leave. They go back for Balogun, renegotiating a deal for less money.
Monaco, which prefers to lose Balogun, agrees to lower the terms and blocks Camara’s exit to Chelsea minutes before the deadline. And once it’s all wrapped up, with everything agreed between Everton and Monaco, it’s Balogun himself who cancels the signing and heads back to Liverpool without putting pen to paper.
Result: Chelsea ends up without Enzo Fernández and without a replacement, Everton ends up without Beto and without a replacement (Barry as the only striker), and Monaco, which needed to sell, ends up with Camara and Balogun but without the cash. Everyone screwed.
Between this and the Malick Fofana saga, it’s been the best deadline in years.
