Liverpool gossip: Arsenal enter the race for former Reds target

Show/hide article…

Liverpool may have to face Virgil van Dijk in the colours of one of their title rivals as Arsenal joined the hunt for the Dutch defender.

The Reds campaign to land Van Dijk ended in an embarrassing apology by the club to Southampton, but the episode hasn’t discouraged others in trying to prise him away from St Mary’s.

The Gunners defensive shortages of last season were highlighted by injuries.

And now with captain Per Mertesacker coming into his likely last season and with Laurent Koscielny’s continued injury woes, a consistent, top level defender could be what the doctor ordered for Arsene Wenger.

The Sun says Arsenal are keen but face an uphill battle given their lack of Champions League status.

Jurgen Klopp claims the goalkeeper’s No 1 spot is up for grabs at Liverpool , writes Mirror Football’s David Anderson.

In a blow to Simon Mignolet, Klopp claims rivals Loris Karius and Danny Ward will be given opportunities to impress during pre-season.

Mignolet must prove himself to Klopp all over again, despite shining during Liverpool’s successful campaign for a Champions League place when he kept four successive clean sheets at the end.

Klopp insists competition brings the best out of his goalkeepers and told liverpoolfc.com: “That’s very comfortable for the manager - three really good goalkeepers.

“It is like it is and nothing is decided, they can all show how good they are. I don’t want to bring doubt so that they start doubting."

Arsene Wenger is convinced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will stay at Arsenal this summer, writes Mirror Football’s John Cross in Sydney.

Liverpool have been keen on the England midfielder and have made enquiries about his availability, which have been rebuffed.

Oxlade-Chamberlain only has a year left on his current contract at the Emirates, but the Gunners are still hopeful they can reach agreement on an extension.

Even if they do not, Arsenal appear to have reached a compromise and are likely to allow him to go into the final year of the deal in the hope of persuading him to stay.

They appear to be more relaxed about Oxlade-Chamberlain - who is part of the 25-man squad on the club’s pre-season tour here - than star men Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Van Dijk at the heart of Pellegrino’s plans

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk has jetted off with Saints to their pre-season trip to Austria, where manager Mauricio Pellegrino will continue to mould his team with the captain at the heart of his plans.

In the mind of the club’s senior figures, Van Dijk’s future remains very much at St Mary’s, and have no interest, as has been reported, in selling the talismanic centre-back.

The Dutchman, who celebrated his 26th birthday last Saturday, was on the plane to Saints’ Austrian training camp, despite a continuing stream of gossip stories relating to an exit to Liverpool.

Van Dijk has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, but they have both now secured the services of other centre-back targets.

The latest national newspaper reports suggest that Van Dijk is keen to push through a move to Anfield.

However, with no bid on the table and these claims very much unsubstantiated at this stage, Pellegrino will continue to shape his team with Van Dijk a key man in that.

The former Celtic man, who Saints bought from the Scottish giants in 2015 for £13m, has been one of the main talking points of the summer transfer window, with Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all interested.

However, with Saints not willing to sell, some clubs have seemingly turned their attentions elsewhere, with United and Chelsea both buying different centre-back targets for huge sums.

Jose Mourinho’s side spent £31m on Victor Lindelof from Benfica, while the Stamford Bridge outfit have brought in Roma’s German international defender Antonio Rudiger for around £29m.

Liverpool have already apologised and publicly dropped all interest in Van Dijk, having been reported to the Premier League by Saints for an ‘illegal approach’.

But it seems Jurgen Klopp’s side still harbour a big interest in the Netherlands international, although Saints feel well-placed to withstand bids as long as Van Dijk doesn’t agitate for a move.

Saints have headed to Austria for a training camp which will conclude on Saturday with a friendly against St Gallen at FC Goldach’s Sportanlage Kellen ground in Switzerland.

Pellegrino, who is set to announce his backroom staff soon, will then take Saints to France later this month following a friendly at Brentford on July 22.

They will be based in Evian from Monday, July 24 and will play a friendly against Saint-Etienne the following Saturday.

The game will be played at Stade Municipal de Chambery with a kick-off time of 5pm BST.

Virgil van Dijk to Arsenal: Gunners could compete with Prem rivals to bolster defence

Show/hide article…

Arsenal have joined Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City in the hunt to land Virgil van Dijk

Southampton defender Van Dijk has been as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers since moving to the south coast from Celtic in 2015.

Liverpool tried to sign the 26-year-old Dutchman earlier in the summer but failed and were forced to issue an apology to the Saints over their aggressive transfer tactics.

Van Dijk remains keen to move to Anfield before the new season gets underway but several other top English clubs are sniffing around.

The Sun claim Arsenal have joined Chelsea and Manchester City in pursuit of the Holland international.

It is said that Arsene Wenger is keen to sign him given that Per Mertesacker is set to retire next summer and the ongoing injury concerns around Laurent Koscielny.

Two years later Mark still suffers with numerous lasting injuries, including Brachial Plexus, with permanent damage done to the nerve system that connects his spine and shoulder.

Along with leaving Mark with a paralysed shoulder and almost no feeling in his left arm, he has also had to contend with several mental health issues from the resulting brain damage, and in the last two years he has struggled with PTSD, amnesia, anxiety and depression.

After Mark started playing for his local disability football team, Andover Streets Ahead, in June 2017 he was selected by Saints Foundation to represent Southampton FC in Austria Vienna’s International Disability Football Tournament, which gave him a new lease of life and the motivation to carry on pursuing his goals.

Transfer news: Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham all tracking £12m-rated Barcelona youngster Munir El Haddadi

Show/hide article…

Premier League trio Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham are all considering a swoop for Barcelona youngster Munir El Haddadi.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Valencia, netting six times in 32 appearances for the Spanish giants.

Munir came through the youth ranks at Barcelona but has struggled to nail down a regular first-team spot and is likely to be on the move again this summer.

Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham are all keeping tabs on the youngster’s situation and, according to Spanish newspaper Sport, the Premier League trio are considering bids of around £7m.

However, it has been claimed that Barca are looking for closer to £12m, with Russia side Zenit are willing to offer their valuation.

Despite this, Munir is reportedly not keen on a move to Russia, leaving the race for his signature wide open ahead of a potential summer move to England.
