Southampton star is ‘close to joining Liverpool’

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk, according to former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy.

The 40-year-old, who played for the Merseysiders between 1997 and 2004, reckons his old club are ready to go all out to strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s squad, report the Liverpool Echo.

Liverpool moved to distance themselves from Van Dijk, 26, earlier this summer when issuing a public apology to the Saints.

But while Murphy reckons the transfer could soon be in the offing, Klopp refused to be drawn on the subject after his side’s 4-0 pre-season win over Tranmere.

The German said: "It would be very wrong to talk about this.”

Murphy, however, is confident Van Dijk will end up at Anfield.

“Personally, the problem for Liverpool was more defensive (last season),” he said.

“I think the van Dijk thing is close. That would be a phenomenal signing.

“But there’s definitely more business to be done at Anfield.”

Liverpool, who have already smashed their club transfer record to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma, also want RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and are tracking Arsenal contract rebel Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Speaking to sport360.com, Murphy added: “My understanding is that they are really trying to push the boat out in bringing new players in to try and compete.

“I suppose the other question is do they need a striker who can get 20 goals a season?

“Maybe they’ll look there as well, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Pep Guardiola is ready to put Dani Alves’ snub behind him as he prepares a £30m bid for Ryan Bertrand.

Manchester City are desperate for a group of new full-backs after releasing Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna this summer.

City missed out on Brazilian right-back Alves, who joined Paris Saint Germain instead, but have now turned their attention to Southampton left-back Bertrand, according to the Sun.

Guardiola has demanded three new defenders - with England duo Bertrand and Kyle Walker leading the list.

Saints are not looking to sell Bertrand, who they signed from Chelsea three years ago, but a £30m offer could tempt them.

Borussia Dortmund are ready to make a move for Olivier Giroud after the Arsenal striker admitted he is considering quitting the Emirates. The France striker fears the arrival of £52million record signing Alexandre Lacazette has put his Gunners future in doubt.

Mauricio Pochettino has told Daniel Levy to defy Jose Mourinho in the £50million battle for Eric Dier. Manchester United have targeted the Tottenham and England midfielder to become their latest recruit as they prepare to return to the Champions League in September.

Chelsea have won the race for £28million Real Madrid right-back Danilo. Boss Antonio Conte has seen off former employers Juventus to land the the 25-year-old. Chelsea hope to be able to complete the deal before Conte takes his squad to the Far East for pre-season training next week.

Manchester City are set to step up their interest in Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker after Paris Saint-Germain confirmed the signing of Dani Alves. City were confident of signing Alves on a free transfer from Juventus following lengthy talks with the Brazil international and his agent.

Samir Nasri is a target for Roma while Paris St Germain want the midfielder’s fellow Manchester City outcast Eliaquim Mangala, the France international defender, on loan.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis is finally ready to cash in on Salomon Rondon. The Baggies fended off a £32.2million bid for the Venezuela international from Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian in January.

Tottenham and Arsenal are battling it out to sign Manchester City wonderkid Jadon Sancho. City are desperately trying to get England Under-17 starlet Sancho to commit his future to them. But he has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, leaving the door open for the north London duo. Bundesliga runners-up Red Bull Leipzig are also keen on the attacking midfeilder.

Manchester City are signing Brazilian midfielder Douglas from Vasco da Gama for £10.7million, but will loan him to their new Spanish sister club Girona to gain experience of European football.

Antonio Conte has offered Nathaniel Chalobah a £17million Chelsea contract in a last-ditch bid to keep the English starlet. England Under-21 midfielder Chalobah has just one year left on his current £45,000-a-week deal, and wants more regular first team football after just one Premier League start last season.

Ajax’s Jairo Riedewald is at the centre of a three-way Premier League scrap. Crystal Palace, Everton and Newcastle are all battling it out to snap up the versatile 20-year-old Dutch international. Reidewald, who can play as a centre-back, left-back and also a defensive midfielder, is valued at around £9million.

Checkatrade Trophy draw rigged to ensure Saints did not face Pompey

Show/hide article…

English Football League boss Shaun Harvey has defended the decision to rig the draw for next season’s Checkatrade Trophy in order to avoid a Portsmouth-Southampton clash, saying the clubs had requested it.

The south coast rivals have not played each other since April 2012, when they drew 2-2 in the Championship, and with Pompey in League One and the Saints in the Premier League the regionalised Checkatrade Trophy was the most likely forum for their next meeting.

The competition, which has traditionally been a knockout for League One and League Two sides, was revamped last summer to include 16 invited under-21 teams from clubs with category-one academies.

That experiment has been extended, with some notable tweaks, for the next two seasons and the draw to decide which four-team group the invited sides would join was made in London on Wednesday.

But before the draw started for the eight southern groups, Southampton’s ball was removed from the pot and a separate draw was made for group A, which already featured Charlton, Crawley and Portsmouth, and Fulham was picked.

After that, the southern draw preceded as normal, with Southampton eventually going into group H with Cambridge, Northampton and Peterborough - three teams which enjoy their own lively rivalry. In fact, Swansea were drawn in Newport’s group and Grimsby and Scunthorpe are in the same group in the northern half of the competition.

Speaking to reporters after the draw, Harvey said: "One of the commitments we made, right at the outset, was to try to avoid group-stage games that had a significant potential for high levels of disorder.

“Previous experience with Portsmouth-Southampton games, particularly when talking to Portsmouth, was that there does appear to be potential for that when they’re drawn together. So if we could avoid that in the group stages then it was a conscious decision that we should do so.”

When asked about the other local rivalries, Harvey said the view from the clubs involved was the risks were not “significant” and could be “managed”.

The irony, however, is that last season’s Checkatrade Trophy was dogged by poor attendances, especially in the group stages, and fierce derbies could be an ideal way to generate some enthusiasm.

“We want a profile for the competition but it’s about balancing risk,” said Harvey.

"We could have crossed our fingers and we would have had a one-in-eight chance but we did say we would look at the structure of the groups to avoid that particular issue.

“They could meet each other later in the competition, in which case it’s a straight knockout draw and the game will go ahead on that basis. But why create the potential for negative publicity around the game if you don’t need to?”

On the wider issue of the competition’s value, Harvey was confident lessons have been learned from the mixed results of last season’s experiment.

On the one hand, the new format did provide more opportunities for youngsters to play first-team football and the positive feedback from those invited clubs that took part last season has tempted Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs to join this year.

The EFL clubs also benefited from the Premier League’s financial support for the idea in the form of increased prize money and that pot has been sweetened further, with a total of £3million now available for the 48 clubs to fight over.

But, on the other hand, fears that the introduction of Premier League youngsters into an EFL competition was a precursor to B teams joining the league pyramid led to fan boycotts and attendances, particularly in the group stages, were poor.

There was also considerable grumbling from EFL managers when they were fined for fielding under-strength teams in a competition intended to help player development.

That complaint has been addressed, however, as the full-strength requirement for EFL teams is more flexible next season - there should be no repeats of the embarrassing scenes that saw goalkeepers substituted in the opening minutes of games, for example.

Harvey admitted that some of the problems were a result of the league failing to communicate its objectives but said he was encouraged by the fact that two thirds of EFL clubs voted to continue with the concept of invited teams, the backing he received from the Football Association and Premier League and the happy ending provided by 74,000 fans watching Coventry beat Oxford at Wembley in April.

“There will always be some supporters who believe the competition should only be for League One and League Two clubs and it should be the traditional route for small clubs to get to Wembley - it’s a valid view they’re entitled to hold,” he said.

“But I’m hoping that when we get the message out about what we’re trying to achieve, the crowds will increase and they won’t have to go too far to get back to where they were for this competition in the past.”

Man City to press ahead with £25m bid for Ryan Bertrand

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are pressing ahead with their move for Ryan Bertrand after missing out on Dani Alves.

Sportsmail reported on June 6, how City had earmarked the Southampton left-back as manager Pep Guardiola looked to bring in new full-backs for the summer.

Bertrand has been a regular for England since moving to Southampton from Chelsea and the south coast club have not been keen to sell.

However, City are expected to offer around £25million for the 27-year-old in the hope of tempting them into a deal.

City remain in talks over the purchase of Benjamin Mendy from Monaco while they expect Tottenham to increase their asking price on £50million rated Kyle Walker.

City had hoped to add Dani Alves prior to him accepting a greater pay packet at Paris St Germain.

Meanwhile, Napoli are showing interest in City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo while Napoli’s Pepe Reina has been proposed to City.

Joe Hart remains in discussions over a loan deal to West Ham.

Jurgen Klopp responds to transfer rumours about Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool were targeting the Southampton centre-back over the summer until they found themselves embroiled in a ‘tapping up’ row.

Eventually the Reds were forced to issue a public apology over their approach to signing the 26-year-old.

But rumours have resurfaced that Van Dijk could still be on the way to Anfield as a touted move to Chelsea or Manchester City never came off.

But for his part, Liverpool boss Klopp won’t speculate on a move for the Dutch defender.

No Saints talks for Vietto

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are currently content with their forward options and are not looking to bring in Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto at this stage, despite reports to the contrary.

The 23-year-old is likely to be a player who has appeared on Saints’ scouting radar, but the Daily Echo understands the Argentine is not in talks over a move to St Mary’s.

Vietto, who is a target of Benfica and Sampdoria, netted ten goals and notched five assists in 31 appearances in all competitions on loan at Sevilla last term, and is available having failed to nail down a regular place at Atletico since arriving there in 2015 from Villareal.

But, while the word in Spain is that Saints hold an interest in Vietto, suggestions any potential deal has reached talks are so far thought to be inaccurate.

Saints are satisfied with their attacking options at the moment, with Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Sam Gallagher making up a well-stocked striker line-up for Mauricio Pellegrino to pick from.

Without the extra games of European football next season, Saints felt happy to let Jay Rodriguez leave for West Bromwich Albion in a £14m deal earlier this month, allowing the 27-year-old to go and find regular football at The Hawthorns.

After a 12-goal stint on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers last term, the club handed Gallagher a four-year contract on July 1, meaning they have four varied options up top for Pellegrino.

The 21-year-old has been attracting interest from Birmingham City and Aston Villa, who want to bring the Devon-born frontman on loan, but Saints are unlikely to accept any approach.

The club are understood to have assured Gallagher that if he signed a new contract at St Mary’s he’d be given the chance to fight for a first-team place.

Adding another striker, like Vietto, would add competition but would leave five players battling for one place upfront in the club’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

Vice-chairman of football Les Reed recently stated that Saints are in no rush about bringing in new players.

“We’ve got a strong squad now and it would be about adding players bringing more value and power,” he said. “It’s not broken so there is no need to bring in players just because of fashion or to get people excited in the transfer market.”
