Southampton weigh move for Atletico Madrid’s Luciano Vietto - sources

Show/hide article…

Southampton are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto, sources in Spain have told ESPN FC.

Vietto’s future at Atletico is up in the air after he spent last season on loan at Sevilla.

And the 23-year-old impressed during his season-long loan, scoring ten goals and contributing five assists for Sevilla during his time at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

However, the Argentine finds himself down the pecking order in Diego Simone’s plans despite the club being unable to register new signings until January because of their transfer ban.

Vietto joined Atletico from Villarreal in the summer of 2015, but he has so far been unable to nail down a regular spot in the first-team at Vicente Calderon

New Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino is well aware of Vietto, having come up against him in La Liga last season when he was in charge of Alaves.

Southampton are in the market for striking reinforcements this summer after selling Jay Rodriguez to West Bromwich Albion and Vietto has emerged on their radar.

Serie A side Sampdoria are also interested in Vietto, with Atleti weighing up their options whether or not to send him out on loan again next season.

Southampton in talks to sign Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto

Show/hide article…

Southampton are in talks to sign Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto, according to Sky sources.

The 23-year-old moved to Spain from Racing Club in his native Argentina in 2014 when he joined Villarreal, where he scored 18 goals in 46 appearances.

The following year he signed for Atletico where he was reunited with former manager Diego Simeone, with whom he had worked at Racing Club.

He scored his first goal for the club in October 2015 as he salvaged a draw for Atletico against Real Madrid with just seven minutes remaining, but only scored two more goals that season.

Vietto spent last season on loan at Sevilla where he scored 10 goals in 31 appearances.

Serie A side Sampdoria are also interested in Vietto.

Southampton sold striker Jay Rodriguez to West Brom earlier this month but have signed defender Jan Bednarek.

Southampton make enquiry for Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old Argentine was signed from Villarreal for £17.5m in 2015 but he spent last season on loan at Sevilla where he scored ten goals in 31 games.

Sevilla had an option to sign Vietto but have not taken that up.

The two clubs are also locked in talks over the transfer of Spain winger, and Chelsea target, Vitolo with Sevilla wanting Atletico to pay his £35m buyout clause.

Atletico have offered to pay the deal in stages and are looking to offload fringe players to help fund the bid with Vietto one of them.

Vietto, valued around £12m, is well known to Maurico Pellegrino after a promising early career in Argentina which brought him to the attention of Europe’s top clubs and from his time in La Liga.

The Argentina U20 international has failed to fulfill his potential to a degree but Pellegrino believes he could get the best out of the youngster at Southampton and pair him alongside Manolo Gabbiadini.

Here’s what Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto might bring to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Sky Sports News claim the south coast club are in talks with Atletico Madrid to bring in the striker. They Tweeted: “BREAKING: @SouthamptonFC in talks to sign @Atleti striker Luciano Vietto – Sky sources. #SSNHQ.” And video shows what the 23-year-old could bring to the Saints.

The clip shows the Argentinian is both powerful in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He’s predominately right-footed but shows composure in front of goal. The player has spent the past season on loan at fellow La Liga team Sevilla, where he found the net six times in 21 appearances.

He’s also been capped at under-20 level for Argentina four times, scoring twice. Meanwhile speculation continues over whether Saints defender Virgil van Dijk will be at the club come the beginning of the season. Liverpool were linked with the Dutchman but Arsenal are also reportedly keen.

Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku in world’s top 10 combined transfer fees

Show/hide article…

Romelu Lukaku has become the fourth most expensive player in history for combined transfer fees after completing his big-money move from Everton to Manchester United.

Clubs have now spent £117.78m on the Belgium international, with Chelsea spending £12.75m in 2011 and Everton splashing £30.06m three years ago following a loan spell that also cost the Toffees £2.98m, according to transfermarkt.

Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria is the world’s most expensive player with combined transfer fees of £152.15m after joining Benfica for £6.80m (2007), Real Madrid for £28.05m (2010), Manchester United for £63.75m (2014) and PSG for £53.55m after just one season at Old Trafford.

Lukaku is set to fill the boots of released striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Manchester after the Swede suffered a long-term knee injury - but the departed 35-year-old ranks second for all-time combined fees totalling £143.74m.

Ibrahimovic joined Ajax from Malmo for £6.63m in 1999, moving to Juventus for £13.60m in 2004, before moves to Inter (£21.08m), Barcelona (£59.08m), AC Milan (£5.10m loan fee and £20.40m) and PSG (£17.85m). He moved to United on a free transfer last summer.

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain ranks ahead of Lukaku in third with transfers totalling £119.85m, followed by James Rodriguez - who completed a two-year loan move from Real Madrid to Bayern Munich on Tuesday - in fifth place on £116.99m.

Retired duo Nicolas Anelka (£108.26m) and Hernan Crespo (£101.38m) rank sixth and seventh - despite Chelsea being the most recent club to pay for the players in 2008 and 2003, respectively.

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez (£99.04m) makes the chart in eighth place, followed by retired Argentina midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron (£98.60m) - who is the fourth United player to make the top 10 - and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale (£98.35m).

Pellegrino’s plan for Long

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will hope to rejuvenate Shane Long by rebuilding his goal-scoring confidence this pre-season.

The Republic of Ireland international was the Daily Echo’s Player of the Season in 2015/16, having scored 13 goals in all competitions during a stunning year under Ronald Koeman.

However, Claude Puel’s disruptive rotation resulted in the striker losing confidence and all form in front of goal.

Although scoring that thrilling last-minute winner at Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield, last season yielded a disappointing five goals in all competitions.

Long was, though, used continually as an impact substitute, starting just ten Premier League games, leaving him struggling for momentum. He ended the campaign sidelined with a broken metatarsal bone in his foot.

The former Reading man demonstrated his frustration when he was hauled off by Puel during Saints’ 3-0 defeat Manchester City, having words with Puel and Eric Black as he was taken off having come on little more than 20 minutes earlier for Manolo Gabbiadini. That incident was later put down to miscommunication.

Jay Rodriguez also had a difficult season under Puel and has since headed for a fresh start at West Bromwich Albion.

But, Long, who put in extra training hours while on holiday in Portugal before returning to St Mary’s for pre-season, has stayed on the south coast with the aim of proving himself to the new man in charge.

“For me, last season was a bit disappointing,” said Long.

"I didn’t play as much as I would have liked to and felt I didn’t get the chances that I deserved at times, so I want to hit the ground running this year.

“It’s the first pre-season in a long time that I’ve been here from the start, so I want to show the manager what I have got and leave an impression on him come the start of the season.”

Pellegrino will be eager to help the 30-year-old rediscover the form he demonstrated in Koeman’s last campaign at the club, knowing he can be a very valuable asset.

The Argentine boss is known for being tactically very flexible and, as he assesses his squad in pre-season, will be eager to work out who will make Saints most potent up top, especially being fully aware of last term’s problems in front of goal.

He certainly has options.

Charlie Austin, last season’s nine-goal top-scorer, Manolo Gabbiadini and Sam Gallagher all make up a strong frontline alongside Long.

The Irishman will be out to show he can fit in with what Pellegrino, who has already been working on playing style and shape, wants, especially with the 45-year-old boss said to be focusing time on high pressing. Something that favours Long’s determined and high energy way of playing.

Long was handed a new contract until 2020 after his exploits a year ago, meaning he’s tied to the club until he’s 33.
