Tom Lehrer has died, aged 97.

Sad news. I’ve always been a fan of his songs and dry, black humour, know the lyrics by heart to many of his songs (but not the Elements:flushed:) and could sing them, but won’t. I admire him for being a Canadian who was thrown out of US for satirizing and ridiculing the country and its attitudes.

He was one of the best of a genre that appeals to my musical taste and sense of humour - from Flanders and Swann to Victor Borge, and more recently Victoria Wood and the brilliant Tim Minchin.

One of my favorites is his Realistic Love Song

“Since I still appreciate you, let’s find love while we may. Because I know I’ll hate you when you are old and grey”

“An awful dobility
A lessened utility
A loss of mobility is a strong possibility
In all probability I’ll lose my virility
And you your fertility and desirability
And this liability of total sterility
Will lead to hostility
And a sense of futility
So let’s act with agility
Whilst we still have facility
For we’ll soon reach senility
And lose the ability”

I’ll shut up now.

Strange that you should quote that particular song. Perhaps it holds some significance to yourself and Mrs S?:grin:

The first one to spring into my own mind was Poisoning Pigeons in the Park. So, I’ll be dropping by the Cowherds later today and raising a glass to Mr Lehrer, before wandering across the Common with my little paper bag of special birdseed. :smiling_imp:

Actually that would be inappropriate, and clearly not applicable as today’s our Wedding Anniversary and after 17 years we haven’t tried to kill each other. Yet.

Thinking about it, The Vatican Rag is probably my blasphemous favourite whilst The Elements is just genius.

I’ll be honest here, apart from the occasional snippet overheard on the radio, the only one I know is Poisoning Pigeons. And the only reason I know that one is my neighbour played it to me many years ago.:smile:

I need to correct myself. He was American, not Canadian, but I recollect him moving to Canada at one point when some of his material was seen to be anti-American

Jock McDonald, lead singer with punk rock band The Bollock Brothers has died after a freak swimming accident. Although I have been (and still am) an ardent fan of punk rock, I have to confess I’ve never heard of Jock, or indeed The Bollock Brothers. Apparently they have released a few albums over the years also some singles, one entitled The Slow Removal of The Left Ear of Vincent van Gogh was a minor hit. Sadly the Bollock Brothers managed to pass under my radar. Scotty?

Sorry mate, I’m ashamed to say I’ve also never heard of them. :frowning: And there was I thinking myself an expert on the genre.

I thought it was some Spinal Tap 2 marketing tbh.
RIP whoever

I remember him from late night TV on Channel 4 when I was at university.

Now, apparently, he was reviled by quite a few…

Terry Reid, an amazing singer who unfortunately made a couple of bad career choices.
I saw him at The Concorde in '69 and was convinced he was destined for superstardom…

He was a superb singer, one of the great unsung British vocalists. RIP.

Mr Benn RIP

Surely you mean Robby Box?
