🏏 🌍 ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

A chance to win some free tickets (sold out long ago) for anyone close to the Bargate now

So it is the day that none of the prospective squad want their mobiles to ring, unfortunately 17 or more into 15 doesn’t go and the final squad will be announced today.

I would go for

Bairstow, Roy, Root, Morgan, Vince, Stokes, Buttler, Dawson, Ali, Rashid, Woakes, Wood, Archer, Plunkett, Curran.

Sadly that would mean 2 of Hampshire’s finest pretty much carrying drinks for about a month as cannot see either getting a look in unless sickness/injury OR the unlikely event that a used pitch needs 3 spinners.

Curran & Plunkett over Willey is something cricket fans could argue about better than Baz vs anyone else, just think that Curran has a BIT more CONTROLLED competitive aggression about him. And IF there was any doubt over Plunkett, pretty sure he would have played yesterday in the “head to head” “bowl off”.

I’ve found a few new sources of stream and hopefully will get time to watch a few games but obviously I’ll miss the Aus & India games due to being at or shopping/packing for Glasto (and one thing that you don’t do at Glasto is burn up mobile phone charge reserves watching TV!)

Can England finally do it? Will Moeen get back to being an influencer instead of a stock bowler? Will the weather and pitches put a dent in the all out attack of England’s batsmen?

Will there actually be a game where Warner & Smith do NOT get torrid abuse?

Time to focus, couple of practice games to come and no doubt England will get blown away by the SA bowling attack in 10 days time to dampen our enthusiasm.

Oh and bumped this thread as there ain’t going to be anything substantive to post on the Transfer Thread until we’ve sold our scrap, and there isn’t any proper golf for 3 weeks

Oh, and those who argue about Willey being the left arm option…
Dawson is a Left Arm spinner…
Problem solved

The World Cup squad has three changes from the preliminary squad, which was announced last month.

Sussex’s Jofra Archer is called up after his debut in the Royal London ODI series against Pakistan.

The 24-year-old fast bowler played two matches in England’s four-nil series victory over the past month.Hampshire’s Liam Dawson returns to the England set-up for the first time since sustaining a side strain during last October’s limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka.

The 29-year-old left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder has been in fine form for his county, claiming 18 wickets and averaging 45 with the bat during Hampshire’s run to the Royal London One-Day Cup final.

James Vince, the classy Hampshire top-order batsman, is also included having played his part during the Royal London ODI series against Pakistan. The 28-year-old will be looking to add to his 10 caps during the tournament.

From the preliminary squad that was announced last month, Kent’s Joe Denly and Yorkshire’s David Willey miss out on selection.

The squad will report to the Ageas Bowl, Southampton on Friday ahead of the warm-up fixture against Australia on Saturday.

If only I gambled…

I would go for

Bairstow, Roy, Root, Morgan, Vince, Stokes, Buttler, Dawson, Ali, Rashid, Woakes, Wood, Archer, Plunkett, Curran.

Tbh it was pretty bloody obvious

So if Vince and Dawson aren’t required for the warm-up game will they be allowed to play for Hampshire at Lord’s instead?

Nope. Report to Ageas Bowl for build up.

Also this explains it a bit more -

Smith added that Dawson got the nod over Denly largely to cover for premier spinner Adil Rashid having a “little niggle”.

“Hopefully he’ll be fine and he plays a full part in the competition, but that slightly tilts things towards spin bowling cover as a priority,” Smith said.

So the ICC have ruled out the ECB request for clarity re Vince and Dawson being released for the Cup Final. ICC rules prevent any such release for domestic games.

They will be. Its a 15 a side game. Batsmen bat. Bowlers Bowl. Pissheads head.

One for the trivia I didn’t know this category - Away kits no less

Root was speaking at the launch of England’s new pastel-blue World Cup kit which, as the host side, they will wear throughout the tournament. That is not the case for all teams, however, with this the first 50-over World Cup in which away shirts will be worn where colour clashes arise.

Of the 10 teams featuring in the round-robin group stage, four – England, India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka – typically play in blue, while there are three – Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh – that have green as their traditional main colour.

It means India, whose home colour is royal blue, are due to wear an away kit for their blockbuster match with England at Edgbaston on 30 June. The Guardian understands the as-yet unveiled shirt has a dark blue front, with the shoulders, sleeves and the back of the shirt a bright orange.

Sri Lanka and South Africa will play in yellow away kits when required, while those for Bangladesh and Afghanistan are red. The nature of Pakistan’s second strip is yet to be confirmed, although they are the “home” team for the group games against Bangladesh and South Africa. West Indies (maroon), New Zealand (black) and Australia (canary yellow) face no such clashes.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…

He’s sustained a small fracture to his left index finger, but expects to be fit for the opening game against South Africa on 30 May. He will miss the warm up game against the Aussies at Southampton on Saturday though. Fingers crossed. No pun intended!

Phew. England stuffing up a middling run chase before the real thing starts
